Bridging the Brain & the Mind at Whitman

Professor Nancy Day (right) sits in the Hall of Science atrium with two students.

One of Whitman’s newest majors is quickly becoming one of its most sought-after. Now in its second year, the Brain, Behavior and Cognition (BB&C) program already has 44 declared majors—the first of whom will graduate this spring.

Assistant Professor of Psychology Nancy Day ’05 (right) is not surprised by the major’s quick success. After all, it’s a program she wishes had existed when she was a student here.

“Biology and Psychology are already two of the most popular majors on campus, so when you provide an opportunity to merge them very deliberately and intentionally, many students are going to gravitate toward that synergy,” she says. “It really is the best of both worlds.”

Day was a driving force behind the creation of the BB&C program. When she first arrived at Whitman as a student in 2001, she planned to major in Biology. But a sophomore-year Psychology class changed her plans.

“I was still very committed to the Biology path,” Day says, “but by taking Psychology, I realized there was so much that biology could explain about behavior. I really wanted to explore that intersection between biology and psychology.”

Day considered her options, from minoring in Psychology to building her own major. Ultimately, she decided to double-major in both Biology and Psychology.

Emeritus Politics Professor Publishes Essay

The Law and Economy Project recently published an essay by Timothy Kaufman-Osborn, the Baker Ferguson Professor of Politics and Leadership Emeritus. In “The Antidemocratic Legal Form of the University (and How To Fix It)” Kaufman-Osborn argues that American colleges and universities, public as well as private, are legally organized as autocracies. To render these institutions consistent with the principles upon which the United States was founded, he concludes, they must now be reorganized in accordance with the tenets of democratic republicanism.

Last Call for Inclusive Excellence Award Nominations

Nominations for the Inclusive Excellence Awards will close on Wednesday, March 12. Established in Spring 2022, the Inclusive Excellence Awards celebrate individuals who have made significant contributions to advancing diversity, equity, inclusion, antiracism and accessibility at Whitman. If you know a student, staff or faculty member who has shown leadership, dedicated service or commitment to teaching inclusive practices, please consider nominating them for an award.

A new consolidated nomination form handles many of the annual campus awards for students, faculty and staff. Nominations for the current award cycle will be accepted through Wednesday, March 12.

The Foreign-Born Faculty and Staff Employee Resource Group did something quite American recently—they went bowling! A wide range of bowling talent was on display as, for some, it was their first time playing. Future meetup events are in the works.
