Sheehan Gallery Exhibit Combines Fashion & Art

Fashionably-dressed mannequins and paintings on the wall in a gallery space.

The current exhibition at Sheehan Gallery, “FACT: fashion + art construct tomorrow,” features paintings by Erik Reel ’75 and fashions selected by fashion curator and writer Rhonda P. Hill.

“FACT” explores a cleansing of the mind, embraces possibilities, challenges how we think of the future, empowering personal agency for both the artist and viewer, while striking an urban sensibility.

Designers Palani Bearghost, Alena Kalana, and Fabiola Soavelo present future-thinking ideas on critical issues such as the environment, multiculturalism, trans-cultural exchange and redefining identity, while painter Erik ReeL explores our understanding of cognitive processing and human consciousness.

“FACT” will be on display through April 4. Two related events will take place this week.

  • Tuesday, Feb. 18, at 4 p.m. in Olin 129
Northwest painter, writer and art philosopher Erik ReeL will speak on his life and work and how ecology and art can help us envision tomorrow.

  • Friday, Feb. 21, at 5:30 p.m. in Olin Auditorium
A panel discussion with Erik ReeL, Rhonda P. Hill and Palani Bearghost will be moderated by Kynde Kiefel, Director of Donald H. Sheehan Gallery. A celebration in the Sheehan Gallery will follow.

Tech Tip

Double-Check Email Recipients Before Sending

Since it is not uncommon for two people on campus to have similar names, be sure to take an extra couple of seconds to verify that you have selected or entered the email of the person you intend to reach before you push the “send” button. This is especially important if the email contains sensitive or personal information about students, trauma, finances, etc.

Healthy Minds Survey for Students

Whitman College is currently administering the Healthy Minds Survey to all students. Look for an email from Dean of Students Kazi Joshua with a link to the survey. The Healthy Minds Survey is part of a national study designed by researchers at the University of Michigan. The results will provide us with a comprehensive picture of mental health and related issues at Whitman. More student responses mean better information from the survey, and better information from the survey will help us best evaluate our ability to meet student needs and to evaluate our existing programs. Participants will have the opportunity to win one of four $250 gift cards and one of ten $100 gift cards.
